What is the Cause of Menstrual Pain
Menstrual pain is a medical disorder! If you’re wondering what the cause of menstrual pain is, we’re going to break it down here. Let me be the first to let you know that you have a medical condition if you are experiencing chronic menstrual pain. This medical condition is Dysmenorrhea.
Is Dysmenorrhea Normal?
Dysmenorrhea, or painful menstrual periods, is a common condition that isn’t normal! “Primary dysmenorrhea (PD) is a common, disregarded, under-diagnosed, and inadequately treated complaint of both young and adult females,” according to the National Library of Medicine.
This condition has been widely studied, and the causes of this pain have been the subject of extensive research. Yet, it is not widely known by women that this pain needs to be treated as a medical condition.
That being said, there are two types of dysmenorrhea — primary and secondary dysmenorrhea.
“Primary dysmenorrhea is a lower abdominal pain happening during the menstrual cycle which is not associated with other diseases or pathology.”, according to the NLM
Types of Dysmenorrhea
Secondary dysmenorrhea is menstrual pain caused by another condition that can include:
- Endometriosis
- Fibroids
- Adenmyosis
- Endometrial polyps
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Contraceptive device
NIH breaks down secondary dysmenorrhea connecting it to an “underlying disease, disorder or structural abnormality within or outside of the uterus.
