What Causes Pain with Endometriosis?
Inflammation is a natural response of your body to fight off infections, injuries, or toxins. But sometimes, inflammation can get out of control and cause chronic diseases like endometriosis, arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, and even cancer. That’s why keeping your inflammation levels in check with a healthy lifestyle and diet is important.
Can Red Wine Help Reduce Inflammation?
One of the foods that can help you reduce inflammation is red wine. Red wine contains a powerful antioxidant called resveratrol. This has anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties. Resveratrol can modulate the activity of various immune cells and inflammatory molecules. And, it prevents them from causing damage to your tissues and organs.
In a study by Maia H. Jr, 12 patients, with endometriosis-associated dysmenorrhea, added 30 mg of resveratrol to a standard hormone therapy. During the study, they found pain scores significantly reduced after two months of treatment.
How much resveratrol is in a glass of red wine?
The amount of resveratrol found in a glass of wine will vary depending on the type of red wine and the brand of red wine you drink. “Red wines have a resveratrol content (per 5-oz glass) of 0.03-1.07 milligrams (mg), which is comparable to the resveratrol content in white wines, which is typically in the range of 0.01-0.27 mg. Red grape juice contains 0.017-1.30 mg per 5 oz.” – News Medical
What is Resveratrol?

It has been studied and found to inhibit the growth of a variety of cancers, reduce oxidative stress, help prevent cardiovascular disease, slow down aggressive tumors, and have anti-inflammatory properties. – Oregon State University
How Much Red Wine Should You Drink for Inflammation?
After learning about resveratrol, you may be thinking grabbing a bottle of red wine every night will help with endometriosis. Well, moderation is key, as always. The amount of resveratrol in each bottle of red wine may vary.
According to the American Heart Association, one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men is considered moderate. A drink is defined as 5 ounces of wine, 12 ounces of beer, or 1.5 ounces of liquor. Drinking more than that can have negative effects on your health, such as increasing your blood pressure, cholesterol, and risk of alcohol abuse.
Knowing that, one glass of wine contains 0.03-1.07 milligrams of resveratrol on average and red grape juice contains 0.017-1.30 mg per 5 ounces, according to News Medical.
That being said, red wine is a healthy alternative for other alcoholic beverages. However, you will need to explore other foods, drinks and supplements rich in resveratrol to get 30 mg daily to combat inflammation from endometriosis.
